A new destination for Survival Mode
Hinterland announced The Long Dark: Iron Road on October 15, with an Early Access launch scheduled for October 27. The DLC expands Survival Mode with Cauldron Island, an archipelago shaped by an abandoned whaling industry and a mystery tied to industrialist Hamish McLeod.
At the center is a century-old Prototype Train that players must restore and operate. It serves as transportation and a mobile shelter, while damaged tracks, rockfalls and other hazards complicate the journey. The train is designed for Cauldron Island rather than the base game’s Great Bear Island.
What the first release includes
The Steam description identifies the current build as the first of five planned islands, with approximately 30 kilometers of railway. It also lists the first version of the train, a Portable Whale Oil Heater and 16 Wax Cylinders carrying historical recordings.
The Fulmar autopilot boat connects Desolation Point on Great Bear Island with Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. Players can bring useful equipment and resources back to the original survival sandbox, although the train itself stays on the new archipelago.
A roadmap rather than a finished package
The larger vision includes five islands and more than 100 kilometers of railway, with additional systems and content arriving during development. Those totals should not be read as the October 27 launch offering. Iron Road requires the base game on Steam.
Hinterland estimates 18–24 months to complete its planned Early Access roadmap, but calls that timeline aspirational. Experimental mechanics and player feedback may change the scope or schedule. For now, the confirmed news is the expansion announcement and its upcoming Early Access date.
